Greetings from sunny Christchurch!

We’re down in the South Island participating in a motorhome relocation programme that we read about in the newspaper. We get to use a lovely Maui motorhome for only $5 per day by booking it through a company called Standbycars, and they even pay for the ferry crossing!

So we flew down to Christchurch on our nearly expired airpoints, picked up our motohome, and have had a whirlwind tour of the city from Lynn of Upper Hutt (not Tawa) who is working in Christchurch at the moment.

I’ve never really fancied Chch when I’ve visited before. Yes, I’ve paddled the Avon ‘Creek’, but it has generally been winter when I’ve visited, and summer brings a whole fresh new list of surprises. Chch is actually quite a beautiful city. Roses and gardens everywhere!

We’ve also been up the Cashmere Hills and out to Governor’s Bay (to see the Ohinetahi Private Gardens owned by Sir Miles Warren, a famous NZ architect) and the Time Ball Station at Lyttleton (where we were given a tour of the Time Ball ‘castle’ by a lady who used to rent the place a student for only $2 a week!).

Then we raced off to Sumner to see the beach and houses (No Peter, you can’t buy any), and then zipped to New Brighton to walk along the new pier. All fantastic!

Last night we ‘camped’ on the side of the Summit Road overlooking Christchurch City. The city lights sparkled like gemstones in a dark and still pond. This morning we chowed down on a lovely cooked breakfast watching BMX riders traverse the hills around us. I feel tired just watching them!

Today we’re off to Akaroa. More news soon (if I can find somewhere to charge the laptop!)
